Interview

‘So many regulations yet so many unregulated’

‘Its a dichotomy. The India market needs another 10-15 years to mature. As of now the policies are made with the premise that everyone will violate the sanctity of the system, hence the architecture is that of heavy touch regulations. An understanding of light touch regulations is required but our people are also very creative to find ways to beat the system’ Ashok Chawla, Chairman National Stock Exchange, Yes Bank, Teri

Former secretary ministry of finance, Ashok Chawla has been a director with Reserve Bank of India, State Bank of India, ONGC, Jet Airways & Life Insurance Corporation of India amidst other laurels.

A man of numbers, well versed in policy and implementation along with regulation.
I bumped into him twice over at the airport catching the same jet flight to mumbai. He, always calm and composed and me barely reaching in time.

We recorded this interview on the 5th floor terrace outside his office of Teri in the Indian Habitat centre. It was a bright sunny morning with the winter nip just setting in. I asked him candidly if he despite he believed in a higher power. I smiled and shared that the ‘Hanuman Chalisa’ has held him in good stead.

I broached the topic of the markets , IPO and the stock exchange as well as a novice that I am. He was kind and patient enough to explain the nuances. A crash course on the Indian markets from the man at the helm him self. SME benefits,Regulations , policies, Crypto Currencies , the no holds barred conversation pretty much covered it all. And of course sitting at the Teri office we had to speak about role models and the influence of people like RK Pachauri former Director General of the organisation.

Oh! And I tried out a new editing software and had a lot of fun as you will see with all the effects.

Hope you enjoy the interaction, don’t forget to subscribe to the channel giving us the much needed impetus to do more. See ya soon.
