Ankur Warikoo, Nearbuy

Interview

Interview Final Part

Ankur Warikoo

I heard Ankur Warikoo address an audience for the first time through a conference that I attended. He came across as an excellent orator. Someone who had the skills to tell a story and connect with the listener. And all of my first impressions pretty much hold true today. I did not have an opportunity to interact with Ankur earlier, in fact, this is one of the only interviews canned in the first season, without a previous connect of some sort.

When I first reached out to Ankur for the interaction, he was extremely forthcoming and promptly fixed for our meeting. Post this his assistant Amy, took over to see the smooth flow in coordination. She was very proactive , in fact a bit much, till we realized Amy was a BOT. That was my Nduh moment with Artificial intelligence !!

The nearbuy office is vibrant, the average age of the employee here is 28. The glass panes make it open and wide, resonant of its culture with no hierarchies. The interview started when the evening was bright and through the glass panes you can see the light outside plunging into the darkness that engulfed as the sun set. It makes for a cool time lapse in the montage at the beginning of the video.

The interaction itself was fun and it flowed smoothly from one topic to the other. Ankur Warikoo, indeed can make that connect with his listener. For an otherwise average time limit of 20-25 odd minutes, this interview enraptures the listener for close to 40 minutes. We got quite a few gems on successes, failures and the way business is conducted in India. Ankur was open, honest and candid. He even shared that some of the ideas that he has worked with, were not originally on his radar but eventually he grew to appreciate and respect them. Including the Groupon idea that subsequently led to nearbuy.

The failure resume that he floated was also an interesting insight. A unique way to accept losses that ultimately lead to success. Here is a link to the same where Ankur duly acknowledges being inspired by the Johannes HausHofer’s CV of Failures. My dear friend Vasav, who has joined the team with the second camera shoot and edit of the Simply Suparnaa series, actually asked me if sharing a failure resume while applying for a job would help. I hold my reservations to that. Here’s to more learnings on the journey with success and failure being mere milestones.
